Ever since Henry Moore personally funded Atkin`s period of study at the RCA in London, 1982 to 1985, Atkin has continued to develop his studio practice, which focuses on the relationship between drawing and sculpture. In recent years, an Award from the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation allowed Atkin the time away from academic responsibilities, at the School of the Arts, Loughborough University, where he is Reader in Fine Art, to concentrate on developing his long standing interest in collage, into a series of small and large scale digital prints th...
Sculpture: 'Strange Meeting (Massive abstract Public Art sculpture)' by John Atkin
Massive Very Large Big Public Abstract Modern Contemporary Stone Granite Marble Civic Urban Art by the Sculptor John Atkin who is particularly renowned for his Urban Civic Pride Commissions. He says of the Magnificent Statue:- "Strange Meeting is huge two-part sculpture, being 3m square of 27 tons of flesh coloured marble, cut from a single piece, sourced from a Chinese quarry which is the size of Wembley stadium. One part of the sculpture is upright, the other supine. The distinctive manila colouring and shape of the work echo the characteristics of garment templates that inspired the design. They were created by John Atkin to be instantly identifiable with the contours of the body: therefore, the sculpture is derived from the human figure but is not obviously figurative.
The title of this award winning work, Strange Meeting, is taken from Wilfred Owen?s famous WW1 poem of the same name in which the poet speaks of a ?vision? or dream-like experience in which he meets a soldier whom he fought against in the previous day?s battle. The confrontation stirs the poet to utter the dramatic statement, ?I am the enemy you killed, my friend? The ?enemy/friend? paradox tilts the poem?s theme of conflict towards reconciliation, reinforced by the soft, concluding line that suggests the soldiers have put their differences to rest, ?Let us sleep now??

Hi Peter, I am so delighted with Equilibrium, I have a collection of over 20 original paintings; but this is my first sculpture, and it pleases me more than most of my art. Please pass my thanks to Liliya, (Liliya Pobornikova in Spain) me and my friends really admire her work. And although I cannot afford the £xxxx for her Rainbow 1, I would love to own it, and would be happy to pay £xxxx. Thank you to you too Peter, especially for bearing me in mind, but also for q...
