Sculpture: 'Fir Blanket (Contemporary Modern Fir ree Bark Indoor sculpture/Art)' by Deanna Pindell
A room-scaled environmental installation (400 sq ft.) This fir bark was saved from the wood used to heat our home this winter, which was salvaged slash from a clear-cut; used steel "skidder" rope from the land where we glean our heating wood ("skidder ropes" are the steel wire used in clear-cutting forest timber) ; used innertube rubber stretched and entangled throughout the environment, to suspend the birds, bark, and rope; and 17 ceramic birds, bound and suspended.
The issues involved in deforestation are complex, as are the relationships we have with trees. My family needs need wood to heat our homes, but each round we burn will reduce the habitat for the birds and seedlings. As I sat with the work, I met old men who`d worked as loggers, and young children who pretended the installation was a living forest.
How will we balance the needs of each species, when all survival is entangled?.
