Alastair Hunter looked around at sundials and felt inspired to try his own imagination on these familiar garden ornaments. Within a short period he started to recognise possibilities for sculpture, and a mathematical need for precision, in this his new experience of creative work.
Alastair draws on engineering experience in energy, aerospace and agriculture, and he tries to sculpt the special intricacies of sundial alignments into forms that help us see and understand more of the world around us. He mainly works in brass and stainless steel, a...
Sculpture: 'Orbit (Scientific Modern Precision Yard/garden sundials)' by Alastair Hunter
The super modern hi-tech contemporary Garden sundial in stainless steel. The orbit of earth around the sun makes us think of things far beyond ourselves and has been the inspiration for Orbit, a latest piece of Sculpture About Time in the Garden by Alastair Hunter to be completed very soon.
The way the sun`s rays reach us is amazingly precise. In my work I try to show how this connects with measuring time, it`s a beautiful many-sided concept.
Orbit will draw on a line of poetry from Edwin Morgan about the excitement of lives strengthening with the sun, on mathematics that elucidate the ancient principles of sundials, and on art realised by skilful engineering.

Hi Peter, I am so delighted with Equilibrium, I have a collection of over 20 original paintings; but this is my first sculpture, and it pleases me more than most of my art. Please pass my thanks to Liliya, (Liliya Pobornikova in Spain) me and my friends really admire her work. And although I cannot afford the £xxxx for her Rainbow 1, I would love to own it, and would be happy to pay £xxxx. Thank you to you too Peter, especially for bearing me in mind, but also for q...
