Profile image of Anthony SmithAnthony has a life-long interest in both natural history and art and it is through his sculptures that he combines these twin passions. A fascination for Natural History led Anthony study Zoology at Cambridge University, after which he set up a studio and began his career as a sculptor, teaching himself the traditional sculpting methods of the 19th-century masters.   His wildlife sculptures are inspired by his travels and direct observations of animals in the wild, supported by studies of animal anatomy and behaviour. Life-size bronze statue of Charles Darwin (aged 22), sited in Christ`s College, Cambridge University. (The statue is available for viewing by the public and is sited in Christ`s College`s `Darwin Garden`)
Artist's comments:
This sculpture was commissioned by Christ`s College Cambridge to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth of one of their most famous Alumni, Charles Darwin. The statue was unveiled by HRH Prince Philip, and subsequently short-listed for the March Award for Best Public Sculpture of the Year.
