Jo Burchell studied art first at Farnham and then Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, obtaining a Degree in fine Art painting. After a break to follow another passion for several years as a professional yachtswoman, she took up the wire cutters and welding mask to begin creating drawings in air. A theme of linear energy has pervaded throughout her work from the very first, and now is being explored using steel, copper, barbed wire and most recently silver. Animals are the subject matter, mostly those that surround her in her life i...
Sculpture: 'Wolfhound (Wire Semi abstract life size Dog garden sculpture statue)' by Jo Burchell
This Wolf hound sculpture of Jo Burchell`s lopes along quite fluidly with tail trailing through the air and ears bending in the breeze. An early and definitive sculpture the was the precursor to many more motion capturing pieces. Entirely made in rusted wire and steel this wolf hound sculpture looks wonderful in an area of lawn, maybe ranging round a border or out from underneath a tree.
This Wolf hound sculpture has significance to me of more than most. Consequently it has been kept at home as a stock piece for a long time, drawing lots of comments from studio visitors.

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful." Thank you again for your wonderful and professional assistance throughout. I am so enjoying my "Running Hare"....I call her Lucy. I received a lovely email from Lucy (Lucy Kinsella the Sculptress) earlier this week and the Running Hare (www.artparks.co.uk/s1104) is now safely in my possession. As I told Lucy, the piece is more beautiful and delicate than I had been expecting. She is very special..
Thank you so much for the part you played in bringing us t... [Read more]
