Sculpture description:
It was described by the architects as an inspired solution to the unusual space that made this piece the winning entry on a shortlist of sculptors drawn up by an architect Rural practice, for their clients. Shoppers in the mall in Stafford Town Centre are treated to two completely different views of the bronze relief sculpture, depending on from which end they approach. From one end, the architectural facades can be seen, and from the other, the historic characters. In the transition between the two, the panels appear to move like pages being turned in a book.
Artist's comments:
This four-metre long bronze relief sculpture was designed rather like a folded concertina structure of eight, tall, narrow panels featuring an alternating frieze of local historic buildings and famous faces? including Queen Elizabeth I and the 18th century playwright Richard Sheridan and Izaac Walton.
