Profile image of Philip MellingPhilip Melling is working predominantly in metals, Philip creates an eclectic range of sculpture and contemporary furniture.
His style ranges from figurative to abstract, often curvaceous and tactile, but with a coarseness that is lent from working with bare steel.
The current collection `Elements` focuses on Earth, Air, Water and Fire, and describes the reaction of when those elements meet.

Sculpture description:
Steel Garden sculpture, inspired by the draw of the Olympic Recurve Bow.
The sculpture has been rusted using salts then sealed with a clear lacquer, giving the surface a beautiful and interesting textured finish.
Artist's comments:
This sculpture was originally a concept model for a larger exhibition piece, but it then became a piece in it`s own right.
Following an Olympic theme, and trying to capture concepts of energy and movement, I was drawn to the shape of the recurve bow.
The pre-weathered finish is one that I love, it can take up to two weeks of wetting and salting the surface before I get the colour and texture I want. I then use a tough lacquer to seal the oxidisation.

Customer comment on 'Brasil - Chess (Corporate Commission of an entire edition)' by Plamen Dimitrov
Although it seemed a daunting project to commission a sculpture on the internet with a tight deadline, Plamen Dimitrov in Bulgaria made it as easy as possible for me in Brazil by producing a series of little clay sketches after each email and sending photos it seemed by return. He worked round the clock and was incredibly intuitive with his understanding of what I wanted. This was despite an 8 hour time difference and having poor English as our common language. He w...
