Profile image of David GrossDavid Gross works with wind-felled trees, wood from managed forests, and salvaged timbers with holes and markings that hint at its history. When he`s working wood, he is simultaneously looking for new ways of using it, while researching how it was used historically. Marks and holes from previous use and natural flaws and splits are exploited for expressive purposes.

He enjoys using wood to make sculptures from observation and study.
In recent years he has made several sculptural studies of natural subjects such as insects, leaves, se...

Sculpture description:
Large/Outsize Big Oak carved and constructed smiling face/mask, by David Gross for sale

Big Affordable Carved Wood Smiling Face sculpture for Inside or Indoors, Wall Mounted or on a stand by the Brilliant David Gross.
Artist's comments:
This face is constructed from green oak sleepers. It was an experiment to see if I could make something in wood without being restricted to the size of a tree. I tried to get a smile similar to the Egyptian carvings in the British Museum. Its hollow and can be suspended. It can also be wall mounted, on a strong wall. I have stands available if necessary.

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful."

Customer comment on 'Beautiful Coins - Commissioned' by Shaun Gagg
The sculptures arrived in the meantime and on weekend I brought them home to my private house/garden.

They arrived in a perfect condition and when I have opened them I was speechless Shaun, they look great.

I got the picture from you where I could see them before but in reality they look much more better !!! JJJ

I am really happy thank you so much that you made them for me.

They will get a perfect place in my garden ... [Read more]
