David Gross works with wind-felled trees, wood from managed forests, and salvaged timbers with holes and markings that hint at its history. When he`s working wood, he is simultaneously looking for new ways of using it, while researching how it was used historically. Marks and holes from previous use and natural flaws and splits are exploited for expressive purposes.
He enjoys using wood to make sculptures from observation and study. In recent years he has made several sculptural studies of natural subjects such as insects, leaves, se...
Sculpture: 'Greenman Gate2 (Carved Wooden Bas Relief Plaque garden/Yard Art)' by David Gross
A carved pointed arched gate with a Carving in Wood of a Greenman in Bas Relief For the Garden or Yard, By the Wood Carver and Sculptor David Gross.
Carved Oak Wood Green Man or (Greenman) Wood Spirits Gates or Doors for Cupboard, or Screens for Indoors Inside the Studio, the House, the Kitchen, the Church, the Office, the Workplace etc Hand Carved By David Gross whose Style is so Distinctive.
I made these two gates because I wanted to experiment with an idea for a technique to make framed panels. The pointed arch is inspired by all the eclesiastical settings I`ve been working in recently. I made the two as gates, but they could be used as large cupboard doors, or as a screen or room devider.

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful." The Windy Day sculpture is absolutely beautiful! Itís even more spectacular than the photos I saw when I ordered. I couldnít be happier with the art OR the service. Peter at ArtParkS is exceptional in his responsiveness to inquiries and in keeping clients updated on progressÖ plus he is so chipper, itís a delight to work with him. The artist, Plamen Dimitrov, is amazing! He delivered the work right on schedule and it was packed with incredible care to make sure it a... [Read more]
