Profile image of David GrossDavid Gross works with wind-felled trees, wood from managed forests, and salvaged timbers with holes and markings that hint at its history. When he`s working wood, he is simultaneously looking for new ways of using it, while researching how it was used historically. Marks and holes from previous use and natural flaws and splits are exploited for expressive purposes.

He enjoys using wood to make sculptures from observation and study.
In recent years he has made several sculptural studies of natural subjects such as insects, leaves, se...

Sculpture description:
a simple solid oak bench carved as an enlarged copy of a tablet of rongo rongo script found in a dwelling on Easter Island.
Artist's comments:
I believe rongo rongo script is as yet undecyphered, so when I was asked to provide a simple bench for the park where Captain Cook was born, I immediately thought of this idea. I hoped to carve the script as close to the original as possible to give everyone a chance to translate it.

Customer comment on 'Brasil - Chess (Corporate Commission of an entire edition)' by Plamen Dimitrov
Although it seemed a daunting project to commission a sculpture on the internet with a tight deadline, Plamen Dimitrov in Bulgaria made it as easy as possible for me in Brazil by producing a series of little clay sketches after each email and sending photos it seemed by return. He worked round the clock and was incredibly intuitive with his understanding of what I wanted. This was despite an 8 hour time difference and having poor English as our common language. He w...
