Lotte Thuenker is one of the international artists that work in Pietrasanta´s marble sculpture studios. She was born in Bonn, she studied in Berlin – and then worked in – architecture. Her works, sculpted in marble, lime stone and onyx, seem at once light and without gravity – and also as if they are in motion, ultimately finding their equilibrium in a single point. She says she finds her inspiration `in the movement of water, the hulls of boats and in the shipwrecks sanded by the sea, as well as in the four elements, and in the animal and plan...
Sculpture: 'Maison Noir - Black House (abstract Contemporary Small statue statuette)' by Lotte Thuenker
Abstact black sculpture, abstract black movement, abstract underwater sea creature, abstract house and home of a sea creature
Black stone sculpture, made from the Belgium Petit granite, a limestone with its small shells and snails, created in a shape reminding a sea creature or a fossile... it is a swing, maybe a mussel form, the lapping of the waves - it can be as well a cave as an opening, a bowl and a cradle. Laying on one point, moving and turning, but then finding its balance in eqilibrium. Tracks of cuts of the diamond saw blade and breaks from the use of the chisels contrast the highly polished contours. The rough, dim and weakly parts strengthen and accentuate the precise brillantly shining parts.

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful." Dear Peter, Enclosed is photo of my lovely fox, placed into an area which I`m developing as a small bluebell and white birch woodland. I`m absolutely delighted with the sculpture! Would you please pass a copy on to Tessa (Hayward), with my thanks and very best wishes. Jenny
