Visual artist and writer, Christine Palamidessiís work is inspired by Mediterranean history and geography, Hindu and Christian mythology and graphic patterns based on the pressure of insides meeting outsides. Her special medium is paper and story, which she often folds and molds into human shapes.
Sculpture: 'Releasing Black Birds from Right Shoulder (Wall abstract Papier statue)' by Christine Palamidessi
A sculpture that wonderfully collides forms of classical antiquity with pop and avant garde; perhaps a bit surreal, too. It is a paper sculpture saturated with plaster and then painted, a traditional Southern Italian technique that the artist learned in Lecce. After her training, Palamidessi subsequently reinvigorated the art form by folding and moulding paper and wire into human shapes to indicate the stories and past-future lives we carry within us. The inside looks like the sky; the outside hard as bone.
I adore this sculpture and have it in my house right now, inside the fireplace on top of a retired coal grate. It looks amazing and very interesting. (see picture) l. Inspired by a story told by a yoga teacher about a drawing she made while in therapy and the subsequent release of the tension in her shoulder. So there`s many layers--the ancient, the personal, the student, the teacher, and, of course, the paradox of how we humans consider ourselves as independent wholes even though we are actually parts of an interdependent universe.

Thank you again for your wonderful and professional assistance throughout. I am so enjoying my "Running Hare"....I call her Lucy. I received a lovely email from Lucy (Lucy Kinsella the Sculptress) earlier this week and the Running Hare (www.artparks.co.uk/s1104) is now safely in my possession. As I told Lucy, the piece is more beautiful and delicate than I had been expecting. She is very special.. Thank you so much for the part you played in bringing us to gather. A... [Read more]
