Profile image of Hans KoenenHis sculptures in bronze and stone of mainly female figures and sometimes a brief escape to animals, in a realistic or kind of imaginary figurative style. There is a development towards sculptures with larger openings, to make them `transparent` so that they more easily adapt to its environment. At the same time the openings do emphasize fragility and stimulate curiosity, perception and story line.
For building up sculptures he prefers to use shapes and structures that are found in nature.

" Etain tells the story of second chances. The beautiful Etain marries as second wife the god Midir. The first wife is so jealous that she changes Etain into a fly! After 7 years flying around she is at a party where she lands into the glass of wine of the wife of a officer. "The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful."
