Profile image of Philip MellingPhilip Melling is working predominantly in metals, Philip creates an eclectic range of sculpture and contemporary furniture. His style ranges from figurative to abstract, often curvaceous and tactile, but with a coarseness that is lent from working with bare steel. The current collection `Elements` focuses on Earth, Air, Water and Fire, and describes the reaction of when those elements meet. Developing the collection Melling concentrated on the process of using repetitive form of material - flat steel bar, to generate concepts and capture the...

Artist's comments:
A Djinn is a spirit that was described in the Quran as `a scorching wind`. The original meaning of the word `Djinn` meant `What is hidden` which is particularly relevant with this sculpture, as it is difficult to see, when viewed, which of it`s elements are within, and which of the elements are without. This sculpture has been powder-coated vibrant dark red with a beautiful but tough paint, to further accentuate the spirit of fire and wind. Held within the tornado of heat is the spirit`s soul, represented with a stainless steel sphere. All my sculptures are hand made, each `Djinn` sculpture has been made to be unique. They differ in material, form and finish of the metal.

Customer comment on 'Brasil - Chess (Corporate Commission of an entire edition)' by Plamen Dimitrov
Although it seemed a daunting project to commission a sculpture on the internet with a tight deadline, Plamen Dimitrov in Bulgaria made it as easy as possible for me in Brazil by producing a series of little clay sketches after each email and sending photos it seemed by return. He worked round the clock and was incredibly intuitive with his understanding of what I wanted. This was despite an 8 hour time difference and having poor English as our common language. He w...
