This season started with a really special person opening the exhibition, Martine Gerardin, the Editor in Chief of Cent Ideas du Jardin, France’s Garden & Lifestyle Magazine, The Travel & Garden Correspondent of Le Figaro & The Gardeners’ guru on French Television, however even her enthusiasm for the Art Park could not dispel the torrential rain. Despite this most of the invited guests braved the elements and at least had a look. Her heartfelt and knowledgeable opening speech is reflected in the accompanying press cutting. She said that the layout and selection was far and away the best she had seen, compared with all of the Sculpture Parks she had visited.
Despite a wet start and a
drop in visitor numbers sales have been brisk with work going to
Toronto, The West Country, Switzerland & Holland and again
about a third going to islanders, both new and regular collectors.
(One of them had had a piece by EV Meynell shipped out to New Zealand
some years ago to be built into his yacht being constructed over there!)

A Good Read
THE ORCHARD by Tony Veale
An Artist who exhibited with us before he turned Author, has just had his latest novel published. It is a roller coaster of a read threading it’s plot through the machinations of the art world touching on the saucy & sexy side as well as the amusing and frankly poignant. All in the creamiest of prose interspersed with the delightful verse of one of the poet characters. It tells the story of an Artist bent on changing the world, whose work is bathed in the floodlight of publicity, which launches him onto the world stage. I loved his sculpture and this written piece of eloquence is well up to the same standard.

Modern British Sculpture
Guy Portelli ’s book beautifully presented, lavishly illustrated and meticulously researched, as only Guy can do, is a wonderful insight into who’s doing what on the British Arts scene. The Contrasts of the work he has chosen to represent the 20 th Century is truly amazing. With this wealth of skill about, one need not worry about the sheer ability and imagination that abounds in this country. I was pleased to see so many of our artists represented in the book.
