Robert Mileham, whose ability to capture the spontaneity and bounce of a dog and those dreamy moments in a child`s life is nothing short of a mystery. His work is really all commission resulting from people having seen his work in an exhibition or in a collection which are as far a field as the USA, Hong Kong, Belgium, Switzerland and of course Britain. He must be one of the finest sculptors of girls around.

'Mary a Poorhouse Waif (Bronze Childhood life size sculptures/statues)' by Robert Mileham
Description: Bronze Child Girl Slightly Smaller than Life Size Commission sculptures/statues for sale or commission by one of the leading Childhood Sculptors today The Prize Winning Robert Mileham.
"Robert Mileham was commissioned to sculpt Mary for a cobbled courtyard in Hampshire. This yard was part of a Country Workhouse between 1791 and 1834. The owner wanted a statue in memory of this, but as it would be a daily reminder, it should not be depressing. Despite the terrible conditions the poor lived in at that period, she was probably better off than her city counter-part. In reality she would probably have been an ill fed, miserable child. It was agreed however, to produce a work, which would be uplifting even on a rainy day. At the risk of being accused of sentimentality, Robert produced a sculpture of how they might have preferred to be remembered, not as there were. He made her lean and ragged, but making the best of things with a smile. She is in a Contrapposto Pose and was installed in July 2002.

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful."
