Refusing this call, Jonah instead flees aboard a ship sailing to Tarshish. A wrathful storm ensues on the sea and Jonah, exposed as being the likely source of God?s disfavor, submits himself to be thrown overboard to spare the lives of the other sailors from shipwreck. Thrown overboard he is saved from drowning by being swallowed by a huge fish and remains in the animals belly alive for three days and three nights. Within the fish Jonah penitently cries out to God and is then vomited up, yielded to obeying God?s call to travel to Nineveh.
