'Echochamber (abstract Echo Amplifier Outdoor Outside Decoration/statue)' by Deanna Pindell
Description: Three small meditation chambers, each one encloses an isolated tree in a hard-surface plaza on a University Campus. The two larger booths have small meditation benches, so that two people may sit (one in each space). The translucent walls of each triangular chamber reflect sound, so that, although the chambers are 30 feet apart, the two participants can share a quiet conversation. Originally there were four trees, but one died, leaving an empty space, so the third booth is half-sized and twice as far away from the second (visually emphasizing the emotional perspective).
Description: A functional remediation eco-artwork, 200-foot long, meandering through a wooded park. Invasive vegetation was removed (over two tons), and replaced with the important indigenous shrub, salal. The wattles were hand-sewn of jute and stuffed with straw. Poetry (in English) and the word for "salal" (in eight languages of Pacific Northwest Coastal indigenous tribes) were also hand-stitched into the wattles. Eventually the salal will grow back and the wattles will decay, becoming mulch and nesting material for the resident flora and fauna.
