'Peeping Giant (Grotesque sculpture statue Wall panel stone Carving)' by Thomas J. Nicholls
Description: This design/carving by Thomas was selected to become one of the new contemporary grotesque sculptures which will be built into the south front of St. Georges Chapel, Windsor. I wanted to create a playful idea that the Chapel has a guardian giant who peers down at visitors to the site. I am particularly pleased with the way that the moulding itself has become very much a part of my design being made to appear malleable, bent down with ease by the giant in an attempt to give him a kind of timeless power. With this carving Thomas created the sense that the giant is very much part of the fabric of the building, literally living in and as part of the building. The giant will appear old and wise but will also retain a level of mysticism for its audience so that he remains intriguing.
